Screening, Intervention and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT) 4-hour course
(just the online class)

This training module will review Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT). SBIRT is an evidenced-based practice to identify people who use substances in ways that increase their risk of health, work, family, and social problems, and motivation to help them reduce their use. Topics will include:

  • The need for implementing SBIRT to identify people who use substances in a risky way
  • The continuum of substance use and where SBIRT fits in
  • The health effects of substances
  • Details of each component of the SBIRT process, including Screening, Brief Intervention and Referral to Treatment best practices
  • Implementation of SBIRT

Course Objectives:​

  • To describe the benefits of implementing SBIRT
  • To identify what part of the substance use continuum SBIRT is targeted to
  • To identify screening tools and describe the screening process
  • To choose the components of a brief intervention
  • To apply best practices in the referral process
  • To use motivational interviewing techniques as part of the SBIRT process
